We Bought an Inn!
We began talking about a career change and becoming innkeepers in December 2024 and on September 30th 2025, we made it official: we bought an inn! Set in the beautiful Washington historic neighborhood in South Bend, IN, Cushing Manor is the perfect spot for travelers and Notre Dame fans, families, and alumni. After research and touring various cities and houses, this house and town stood out from the very beginning.
Built in 1872 by Albert and Martha Cushing, our home has been a beloved bed and breakfast welcoming guests as recently as 2015. We are honored to bring it back to its former glory.
Let the Restoration Begin!
Over the last decade, the building has been utilized as apartments for 8 tenants. With a mostly full house in October, we couldn’t do much in the house so we focused on creating the name, logo, and a first version of the website. We have moved into one of the unused bedrooms and kicked off our renovation project by clearing out rooms and organizing furniture and decorations left from the previous owners. It’s been dusty, busy, and exciting.
Next up: careful restoration with help from skilled tradesmen. We’ll repair what’s worn, shine what’s special, and honor the original charm. We will continue to share updates here and on social media about our progress.
Treasure Hunts
As we familiarize ourselves with the manor, we are finding amazing and quirky treasures, including:
- 20+ tea kettles
- A hat made by The Shelton Hat Company (a business owned by William R. Shelton that operated from 1830-1850’s)
- A photo album from the 1900’s with a lock of hair that is at least 125 years old.
When we are not hard at work on the house, we are exploring downtown South Bend and surrounding areas. So far our favorite new places are Chicory Cafe and Manny’s Sports Bar.
